Oaklands School

Drawing of Oaklands School
The Oaklands School was built sometime between 1871 and 1900.
Drawing By Mary Cornish, a Douglas County resident.

.....Several schools may have been the predecessor to the Oaklands School (District 32.) The first school seems to have been located at the site of St. Phillip in the Field Episcopal Church, south of Wolfensberger Road on Highway 105. That was either a log building or a very temporary structure which predated St. Phillips. The school was there around 1866.

.....The Garber Creek School is another possible successor to Oaklands. Located on the Manhart Ranch west of Highway 105, near Pine Cliff Road, the Garber Creek School was held in the blacksmith shop on the ranch. This site dates back to around 1871.

.....The Oaklands School site was at the intersection of Highway 105 and Wolfensberger Road, directly west of Castle Rock. The families that attended school at Oaklands include the Curtises, who own the Oaklands Ranch, and the Hiers. Carol Hier was a long-time Douglas County Clerk and Recorder.

.....The Oaklands School House was built sometime in late 19th Century after 1871. The building was closed in 1956, and the students were sent to Castle Rock or Sedalia. The building was used temporarily as a community center, then a shop, and finally fell into disrepair. In 1988, the Douglas County School District (RE-1) moved the building to South Elementary in Castle Rock, where students helped to restore it. The school is now used by the school district to demonstrate 19th Century schools to elementay students.
