[Woltzen Store, Castle Rock]

1900

Halftone image. "Reistle" written in bottom right corner of print. Woltzen Store, Castle Rock, Colorado. This store was started in 1895 by J. H. Woltzen at Third and Perry Streets in Castle Rock. In 1898, Woltzen moved to this larger store at Third and Wilcox. The building has windows across the front and two smaller windows on the second floor of the front of the building. Signs painted on the glass front of the building read: "General Merchandise and Notions, Fruits, J.H. Woltzen, Groceries." The building's large false front conceals the gabled roof (with brick chimney) of the long building. Five windows along the side of the building on the second story. A door at the rear of the building was used by the family, who lived at the back of the store. The upper floor of the building was called "Woltzen's Hall" and was used for community events. The building burned down in about 1910. A large garage or barn building is visible at the rear of the building.
