Correspondence in the form of personal letters among members of the Smith family spans from 1870 to 1968 and paints a portrait of early life in Castle Rock. Genealogical and family documents residing within the collection include: narrative histories of the Smith and Grout families, wedding certificates and invitations of Upton Treat Smith and Elizabeth “Lizzie” Grout, Edwin Smith and Zelma Woods, Guy Watson Smith and Linda Purnell, and Edwin Smith and Annie Stauffer. Educational documents, such as diplomas, awards, and grade records are included in the collection, from Douglas County Schools, the University of Colorado, and the University of Illinois for Guy Watson Smith.

Professional and personal manuscripts and writing comprise a portion of the collection including: “Maine to Colorado,” a narrative of Upton Treat Smith’s journey westward (later published in the Record Journal of Douglas County); Edwin Smith’s personal journal from September 1896 to November 1898; an article by Roger Putnam Smith from the FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin on the history of law enforcement in Denver; and an issue of The Colorado Magazine from July 1951, which features an article written by Edwin Whitney Smith on the history of the West Plum Creek portion of Douglas County.

Three hundred and ninety-five photographs of the Smith family are contained within the collection in two scrapbooks and an assortment of loose photographs. Photos depict members of the Smith family at various stages of life. The scrapbooks belonged to Guy W. Smith, and photos are from various outdoor excursions, hikes, and other activities at places like Devil’s Head Peak, Longs Peak, and parts of Boulder County.

Collection contains additional artifacts that belonged to the Smith family, such as A Civil War guard book belonging to Upton Treat Smith, which details guard records from the H. The different sections are bookmarked and labelled by a processor.
