Scope and Content

Wallpaper samples pulled from the Upton Treat Smith House at 403 Cantril Street in Castle Rock during renovation in 1995. The house was built in 1902.

"The house is built of Castle Rock lava stone [rhyolite]. It is of a rectangular shape covered with a steeply pitched gable roof. The windows are tall, narrow, rectangular openings with rough hewn stone lintels and sills. They have wooden, double hung casings and have mock shutters on the sides. A hip roofed porch stretches across the east front of the house with decorative post brackets. The door is off-centered to the right and contains a plain transon panel. The 1 1/2 story house has a brick side straddle chimney. A vertical appearance is the major image created by the architecture." (from Castle Rock, A Grass Roots History by Robert Lowenberg.)

Most of the wallpaper appears to date from around 1900-1920. The Kitchen paper dates from the late 1960s/early 1970s and the 1980s.
