Arrangement of the Collection

Organized by series. Series I, Lawsuit against Parker Water and Sanitation District, is organized by date, and then by exhibit number as presented in the case (not chronologically). Series II, Newspaper articles and Miscellaneous Papers, are organized chronologically. Series III Tractor Manuals, are organized by Accession Number (original order).

Scope and Content

Collection contains three different types of materials: tractor manuals, a court case against Parker Water and Sanitation District, and newspaper articles and other sorts of "public information", e.g. meeting minutes, handouts, management plans, published correspondence, etc. The newspaper articles are primarily on the subjects of land rights, water rights, water supplies, growth, open space and ranching. The collection is concentrated during the late 1980s and the first half of the 1990s. This was a when Douglas County was experiencing tremendous growth and when there was a concern about the water supply, ensuing in a court battly regarding the construction of a dam in Castlewood Canyon State Park, a plan unacceptable to many Douglas County residents

The tractor manuals in the collection appear to be mostly reprinted versions of John Deere history books, owner's manuals, and repair catalogs. Although there are no dates on many of the manuals, their condition and the type of paper used in them indicates that they are probably reprints. They have been separated into their own box (Box 3) and cataloged individually.

The court case (85CW448) appears to be in regard to the granting of water rights to the Parker Water and Sanitation District for the purpose of constructing a dam at Castlewood Canyon to replace the one destroyed in the 1933 flood.

The newspaper articles mostly consist of subjects regarding land rights, water rights, water supplies, growth, open space and ranching.

Biography / History

The collection is concentrated in the late 1980's and the first half of the 1990's. At that time, Douglas County was experiencing tremendous growth. The Town of Parker was concerned about its water supply, and hoped to build a reservoir in the Castlewood Canyon State Park. This plan was not acceptable to many residents of Douglas County, and a court battle ensued. The collection contains evidence from the court trial, as well as newspaper articles about the issues surrounding the trial such as water rights, land use, open space, and growth.
