Abstract:The records consist of ephemera, clippings and some assignments from the Cherry Valley School and the Douglas County High School. Not all of the collection relates directly to Bette Saunders. There are also items from her mother, Theodora Irene Noyes and others. The collection includes biographical information about Bette Saunders and her family, certificates of promotion/classification, a class list from 1934; a class night program from 1914; a poem by Naomi Butler, 1916; Commencement invitations and programs, 1989 - 1964; eighth grade graduation programs, 1900 - 1967; a memorial service program for President Harding, 1923; Douglas County High School play programs, 1930 - 1935; Theodora Noyes sewing cards, undated and clippings and programs from the Moseley and Bassell writing contests, 1913 - 1916.

This collection is arranged alphabetically by subject, chronologically within subject headings.

Scope and Content

The collection includes biographical information about Bette Saunders and her family, certificates of promotion/classification, a class list from 1934; a class night program from 1914; a poem by Naomi Butler, 1916; Commencement invitations and programs, 1989 - 1964; eighth grade graduation programs, 1900 - 1967; a memorial service program for President Harding, 1923; Douglas County High School play programs, 1930 - 1935; Theodora Noyes sewing cards, undated and clippings and programs from the Moseley and Bassell writing contests, 1913 - 1916. The collection documents school programming, graduation classes and extracurricular activities as well as Bette Saunders’ own experiences in school.

Lists of graduates and students are particularly important and fairly complete for certain years. Most of the graduates have been listed on the Douglas County History Research Center's website


Biography / History

Elizabeth (Bette) Gilbert Saunders was born on October 31, 1914, in Castle Rock, Colorado. Her mother was Altha Theodora Irene Noyes, and she was born in Castle Rock on September 24, 1890. Her father, David Newton Gilbert, was born on February 28, 1886 in Simpson, Kansas. Ms. Saunders parents were married at St. Johns Cathedral, Denver, Colorado, on January 20, 1910.

Ms. Saunders had two brothers, Jack and Donald, and one sister, Corinth. Her full given name was Sylvia Elizabeth Gilbert. She was married to Ben Saunders (born September 26, 1914 in Sedalia, Colorado) on December 9th, 1945.

Ms. Saunders attended the Cherry School in Cherry Valley, Colorado, and the Douglas County High School in Castle Rock, Colorado. David Gilbert, her father, was Mayor of Castle Rock at one point, and they had a ranch in Cherry Valley.

These records were collected by Elizabeth (Bette) Gilbert Saunders as a result of attending the Cherry Valley School (Cherry Valley, Colorado), and the Douglas County High School (Castle Rock, Colorado). The records were donated to the Douglas County History Research Center - Douglas County Libraries in 1993.
