Scope and Content

Collection contains documentation collected by Alan Kania on crime in Colorado and Douglas County. Kania had collected the materials as part of his Democratic bid for Douglas County Sheriff against incumbent Republican Steve Zotos in 1994. The collection includes newspaper articles, Colorado publications on crime statistics, Douglas County specific information including annual financial reports and background on specific Douglas County crime incidents. It also includes documents relating to Kania's campaign, including financial information, campaign literature and speech notes. Photos in the collection include examples of Neo-Nazi graffiti in Parker, taken in the summer of 1994. Zotos won the campaign, but Kania raised some important issues within the county.

Kania's main issues appear to have been motor vehicle-related, youth activities and problems, crime in genera, and specifically hate crimes. There is also information about the "Sedalia Grill Incident." The "Sedalia Grill Incident" refers to an altercation at the Sedalia Grill Restaurant and Bar on Highway 86. Five Drug Enforcement Agency Agents drank 11 pitchers of beer and 14 shots of hard liquor, threatened the staff and owner of the restaurant, made a mess in the restaurant, and then drove off. The owner of the Grill called the Sheriff's office, who pulled the agents over, but failed to administer a sobriety test to the agents who claimed they were on "surveillance." The District Attorney cleared all but one of the men of any wrong doing, and the agents were suspended by the DEA. Kania used this as one of the rallying points of the campaign.

The collection also contains many of Kania’s research notes and reference notes for speeches. One reason why the collection may be interesting is that it is one of the few documentations of an entire campaign that Local History owns.
