Abstract:IREA was incorporated on August 24, 1938. They provide electricity to Douglas County and several other locations south and west of Denver. IREA began publishing a quarterly newsletter-"Watts and Volts" in 1966. By 1977 "Watts and Volts" was a bi-monthly newsletter.

Arranged by subject, then chonologically.

Scope and Content

The collection includes issues of the "Watts and Volts" newsletter and various articles from area newspapers collected by the staff at IREA. Lists of articles are available in the collection folder.


Biography / History

1935 - Franklin Roosevelt signs an executive order creating the Rural Electrification Administration(REA).

1936 - Congress passes a bill setting aside money for loans and funding of the REA.

1938 - Intermountain Rural Electric Association (IREA) incorporates.

1939 - IREA begins construction on its first power lines in the Platte Canyon.

1940 - IREA expands to South Park.

1951 - IREA reaches 5000 customers.

1977 - Energy Crisis threatens United States power supply.
