Abstract:Ken Estlund of Parker and his brother Paul of Aurora invented an improvement to a basketball hoop which would allow the hoop to be released in the event of a slam dunk. After an eight year legal battle, they were awarded a patent in 1985. The hoop design was widely adopted by high school, college and professional basketball programs.

This collection is arranged chronologically.

Scope and Content

The collection contains a videotape of interviews and demonstrations about the hoop, as well as a copy of the patent and copies of newspaper articles.


Biography / History

1976 - NBA rescinds ban on slam dunking. Many backboard and rims are damaged or destroyed.

1977 - Estlund brothers file patent for breakaway hoop.

1978-1985 - While waiting for patent approval from a clerk who believed the device was "too obvious," the Estlund brothers market the hoop to the NBA, colleges and high school basketball programs. The device was licensed to a manufacturer and distributor.

1985 - Patent approved after extensive legal battle.

1991 - Device inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.
